Odesa: Black Sea City with Historic Stairs and Opera

Odesa is a major port city and administrative center in southern Ukraine, spanning about 162.4 km² with a dense population. Its urban layout is organized into districts like Prymorskyi and Kyivskyi, each with distinct roles in city life. The city’s coastal location offers resort areas with sanatoriums and holiday camps primarily used in the warm months when temperatures range from the high 20s to low 30s °C. The Potemkin Stairs and Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre remain focal points of cultural and historic interest.
Potemkin Stairs
These stairs, completed in 1841, are a key city landmark and were famously featured in Eisenstein’s 1925 film Battleship Potemkin.
Opera and Ballet Theatre
Opened in 1810 and rebuilt in the 1880s, this venue hosts ongoing performances in a grand 19th-century building.
